I Can’t Eat the Whole Loaf!

In our household, we can usually eat an entire loaf of sourdough within a day. However, there are times when people aren’t around and my family is getting smaller, which doesn’t make the loaf disappear. What do you do then?

Freeze Your Loaf

If you can’t manage to eat an entire loaf within about three days, you may want to consider freezing half. It freezes well. Since I like to experiment with flavors and hydration levels, I often have loaves I freeze for later. They come out well after having been frozen.

How to Refresh Your Bread

You can refresh your bread if you want your crust to have a nice crispy crust. I do not mind how my crust comes out of my freezer, therefore, I have only tried refreshing sourdough once. This process works for bread that has been frozen and bread that has been on your counter. Below are the steps to accomplish a refresh:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Make sure it reaches this temperature before putting your loaf in the oven.
  2. Prepare the Bread: Dampen a clean kitchen towel and pat it over the top of the bread.
  3. Sprinkle with Water: Sprinkle the crust with water using a spray bottle or even your fingers. This will allow the crust to refresh and not dry out.
  4. Reheat: Pop the bread in the oven directly on the oven rack with the cut side facing downward. Bake for 7-10 minutes. Your crust should come out crispy and yummy!
